The FAA published an updated plan in July 2026 for moving piston-engine general aviation towards unleaded fuel. The stated goal is to eliminate leaded aviation fuel safely by the end of 2030.

A transition, not an overnight switch

The plan is phased. The FAA says 100LL availability must be maintained during the transition, while candidate unleaded fuels proceed through approval, deployment and fleet-use work. That distinction matters: a national goal does not itself approve a fuel for every individual engine and airframe combination.

Misfuelling prevention remains an operational discipline rather than a policy assumption.
